Description

These Southern Cheese Crackers are buttery, flaky, and packed with bold cheddar flavor! A homemade twist on classic cheese straws, these crackers are crisp, cheesy, and slightly spicy, making them perfect for snacking, entertaining, or pairing with dips. A true Southern staple!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (or cayenne pepper for a spicier kick)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

Preheat the Oven & Prepare Dough

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat together the shredded cheddar cheese and softened butter until smooth.

2. Add Dry Ingredients & Water

  1. Add the flour, salt, paprika (or cayenne), and garlic powder. Mix until the dough starts to form crumbly pieces.
  2. Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together into a ball.

3. Roll & Cut the Crackers

  1. Lightly flour a surface and roll the dough out to ¼-inch thickness.
  2. Cut into 1-inch squares (or use a small cookie cutter for fun shapes).
  3. Use a fork to poke small holes in each cracker to prevent puffing.

4. Bake & Cool

  1. Place crackers on the prepared baking sheet, spacing slightly apart.
  2. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
  3. Let cool for 5 minutes, then enjoy!
