Description

Swedish Meatball Noodle Bake brings all the cozy, spiced flavors of classic Swedish meatballs into a creamy, cheesy baked casserole. Juicy homemade meatballs, tender egg noodles, and a rich sour cream sauce make this an irresistible family dinner with comforting Scandinavian flair.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1/2 lb ground pork

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp allspice

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 2 tbsp finely chopped onion

For the Bake:

  • 8 oz egg noodles

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese

  • Chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Make the Meatballs: In a bowl, combine all meatball ingredients. Mix until just combined and form into 1-inch balls.

  • In a large skillet, brown the meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to be fully cooked). Set aside.

  • Cook Noodles: Prepare egg noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.

  • Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth and cook until thickened.

  • Remove from heat and stir in sour cream. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

  • Assemble the Bake: Combine cooked noodles and sauce in a bowl. Fold in browned meatballs. Transfer to prepared baking dish.

  • Sprinkle cheese evenly over the top.

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.

  • Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute all ground beef if preferred.

  • For extra richness, add a pinch of Dijon mustard to the sauce.

  • This dish freezes well—assemble and freeze before baking.
